Ports and the environment

The increase in freight transport flows through ports experienced in recent years has come at a time when the environmental disbenefits of transport have begun to be more widely noticed and commented on. As the fixed link in the distribution chain, ports have become central to the issue of dealing with the environmental impacts of the various transport modes, particularly road transport and shipping, and they must also look to improve their own green performance.

Seeports has a particular interest in the impacts of ports and their traffic on both the local and the global environment. Presentations have been given on various environmental topics concerning ports and shipping at major conferences held in Brussels, Gothenburg, Hamburg, London and other European cities. Written and verbal evidence has also been given on a number of issues relating to shipping emissions, including to the UK House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee.
